Box 20, the second page problem

K-1 box 20 codes: Z, AJ, Y, and the statement behind most of them

Box 20 is where a K-1 stops being a form and becomes a form plus an attachment. The codes are short, the attachments are not, and the mistake that survives review is the one where the attachment belongs to a different partner.

Preparers who have been at this a while read box 20 the way they read a footnote: quickly, and looking for the one line that changes the answer. The line that changes the answer is almost always Z, because Z is where the section 199A components sit and the deduction is worth real money on a large K-1.

Routing table

Box 20 by destination

The 2025 list runs from A to BD plus ZZ, which is too long to memorise and too long to need. What follows is the part that shows up in a working practice, arranged by where it ends up rather than by letter.

ItemCodesLands onWhy it is easy to lose
Section 199AZA statement, every timeQualified business income, W-2 wages, UBIA of qualified property, REIT dividends and the PTP items. The letter carries no single figure because it carries six or seven of them.

Box 20 also carries the checkboxes that matter later: whether the partner has more than one activity for at-risk or passive purposes. Those are covered in the at-risk and passive guide.

Why the identity check has to come first

A fund sends eleven partners eleven statements that look identical apart from the header. Somewhere in the season, one of them is bound behind the wrong K-1, or arrives in the packet for a different investor, or carries a prior year's totals with a current year's header. Every one of those cases produces a statement whose numbers add up. The arithmetic cannot catch it, because the arithmetic is right — it is simply right about somebody else.

So the first comparison is not a number. It is the name and the identifying number at the top of the statement, read against the name and identifying number on the K-1. Only after those agree does any figure on the page mean anything for this client.

Four steps for the box

  1. 1Read the header of the statement before the body. The statement that carries box 20 detail names a partner and an EIN at the top. Compare those two fields with the K-1 in your hand. A statement belonging to another partner agrees with that other partner's figures, which is exactly why it survives a casual check.
  2. 2Separate codes that carry an amount from codes that carry a reference. Some box 20 codes have a figure printed beside them. Others exist only to say a statement is attached. Write down which one you are looking at, because the second kind cannot be totalled and should never be.
  3. 3Keep the code, the amount and the page in one row. The page is the part that makes the row usable six months later. Without it, verifying a single 199A component means opening the whole attachment again.
  4. 4Route, do not compute. The K-1 tells the partner what their share of QBI is. It does not compute the deduction, and it cannot, because the deduction depends on the partner's other income. Record the components and stop.

The recomputation that proves the Z statement is this partner's

Take the profit share printed on the K-1 — Part II item J — and take the same figure from the statement. They must be the same number, in the same form, for the same year. A statement that reports a different percentage for the same partner is not necessarily wrong: allocations can differ between income, gain and capital. What it cannot do is disagree with the K-1 about the partner.

Then add the components the statement gives for QBI. If the statement also reports the partnership's total QBI, the partner's share must fall out of it at that percentage, to the cent, without rounding that changes the figure. When it does not, one of three things is true: the percentage is from a different year, the statement is a draft issued before a late adjustment, or a component line was allocated away from this partner. All three are questions for the issuer, and none of them is solved by editing the number to fit.

Write the result down as a note on the row: statement checked against item J, agreed or did not agree, and the page. That note is what lets a reviewer accept the box in ten seconds instead of re-deriving it.

What goes wrong, and the shape of it

  • A draft statement kept next to the final K-1. Drafts are issued so the investor can ask questions, and they are not the filing version. If the two disagree, the K-1 in the file is the one the partnership filed, and the draft is a document to discard rather than reconcile.
  • Two codes, one row. A worksheet that puts Z and AJ on the same line loses which figure came from which statement, and the two statements are different lengths.
  • A prior-year statement with the right name. The header agrees and the amounts do not, because the year on the statement is the giveaway. The year in the K-1 header is where to look.
  • A code read as its neighbour. Reading a two-letter code as its first letter alone changes the destination. Codes run past Z, and the second letter is not a suffix — it is part of the code.

None of these is caught by checking that the box is filled in. All of them are caught by reading the identity line and the year before the figure. The CSV that comes out of the K-1 reading step keeps the page reference on every row for exactly that purpose.

Plain answers

Questions about box 20

What does box 20 code Z mean?

Section 199A information. In practice it means a statement is attached, because the qualified business income, the W-2 wages, the UBIA of qualified property and any REIT or publicly traded partnership items do not fit in a single amount space. A K-1 with Z and no statement is an incomplete K-1, not a zero.

What is box 20 code AJ?

The excess business loss limitation. It is the partner's share of a figure computed at the partnership level and carried to the partner's own limitation computation, which also depends on the partner's other trades or businesses and filing status. Copy the number; the determination is not made on the K-1.

Why are so many box 20 codes blank on my K-1?

Because box 20 is the catch-all for items that fit nowhere else, and most partnerships do not have most of them in a given year. Codes appear when the underlying fact exists. A blank code is genuinely absent; a code that says STMT is not.

Can I summarise box 20 in one column?

No. The codes point at different forms, different years and, in the case of credits, different returns that have already been filed. A single column forces you to pick one meaning and discard the rest. Keep one row per code with its own amount, or its own statement reference, and keep the page.

Does K1 FastTax read the box 20 statement?

No. It reads the codes and amounts printed on the K-1, keeps STMT as STMT, and records the page. The statement behind a Z or an AJ is a document you read and route, and the check in this guide is about proving that the statement you have belongs to the partner you are preparing.

Keep the codes, and the page they sat on

K1 FastTax reads every box 20 code and amount from a K-1 PDF into one row per code, marks a statement reference as STMT, and records the page so the attachment can be found again.
