Read a K-1, or load a sample, and this side fills in with:
1Form summary
Partnership, partner, the last four digits of each ID, and the profit, loss and capital shares.
2Every box, with its source
Each value beside the line of the document it was read from, so you can check it against the paper.
3A review list
Anything unclear, such as a negative amount whose parenthesis was lost. Nothing is guessed.
4CSV and checklist
One row per K-1, and the boxes in the order you would type them into your tax software.
Nothing here is real data until you read a file or load a sample.
Definition
What a K-1 CSV is
A K-1 CSV is a plain spreadsheet file with one row for each Schedule K-1 and one column for each box. K1 FastTax builds it by reading the box number and IRS label next to each value, so a number lands in the same column whichever way the partnership laid out its PDF.
Columns never move. A box that is blank on your K-1 is an empty cell, not a missing column, which is what lets you paste the rows from several K-1s under one header and total a box across all of them.
The CSV is for your records and your totals. To type the numbers into tax software, use the entry checklist, which is a separate download. How the checklist works.
Step by step
From a K-1 PDF to a spreadsheet you trust
Upload the K-1 pages
A PDF or a clear image. One file can hold several K-1s; each becomes its own row.
Clear the review list
Open the paper K-1 for each held item and decide the value. The needs_review column of the CSV names the same boxes, so you can find them later.
Download the CSV
One file, UTF-8, comma separated, with a header row. Amounts have no thousands separators or currency signs.
Open it in Excel or Google Sheets
Excel opens it directly. In Google Sheets use File, Import. Correct any held cell by hand from the paper.
Stack or total
Paste the rows from other uploads under the same header, then sum a box across K-1s or compare years.
Column reference
All 55 columns
The columns are fixed and appear in this order in every CSV.
| Columns | What they hold |
|---|---|
form_type, partnership, ein_last4, partner, ssn_last4 | Which form was read (1065, 1120-S or 1041), the name of the partnership or other issuer and the last four digits of its EIN, your name, and the last four digits of your SSN or TIN. Full identifiers never appear. |
box_1 to box_20 (27 columns) | One column per Form 1065 box, using the printed ids, so the sub-lines are box_4a, box_4b, box_4c, box_6a, box_6b, box_6c, box_9a, box_9b and box_9c. Amounts are plain numbers and losses are negative. A blank box is an empty cell. The columns for the coded boxes (box_11 and box_13 to box_20) stay empty because those boxes hold code and amount pairs, and box_16 holds X when the Schedule K-3 box is checked. |
box_11_codes, box_13_codes, box_14_codes, box_15_codes, box_16_codes, box_17_codes, box_18_codes, box_19_codes, box_20_codes | Code and amount pairs for the coded boxes, separated by semicolons: A:1200;H:340. STMT means the amount is on an attached statement, and REVIEW means a code was seen but its amount could not be read with confidence. |
partner_type, partner_role, tax_year, final_k1, amended_k1 | From Part II and the form header: for example Individual, Limited partner or other LLC member, 2025, and yes or no for the Final K-1 and Amended K-1 checkboxes. |
profit_begin_pct, profit_end_pct, loss_begin_pct, loss_end_pct, capital_begin_pct, capital_end_pct | Item J, your share of profit, loss and capital at the beginning and end of the year, as percent numbers (0.85 means 0.85 percent). |
k3_attached, other_form_boxes, needs_review | Whether box 16 is checked, the values from a Form 1120-S or Form 1041 K-1 (or anything outside the 1 to 20 range) as box=amount pairs, and the boxes held back for review, such as box_1;box_11. |
Example
One row, cell by cell
Empty cells are left out below. The first K-1 reads cleanly. In the second, box 1 is not in its cell because its sign could not be read: it is named in needs_review instead, and the statement lines are written as STMT.

CSV from K1 FastTax vs a text dump or a hand-built sheet
| What you need | Typing it yourself | Generic PDF-to-text OCR | K1 FastTax |
|---|---|---|---|
| Output you can sort and total | A spreadsheet you build yourself. | A text or Excel dump with the form's layout, not one row per K-1. | One fixed-column row per K-1, ready for sums and filters. |
| Box columns stay in the same place | As good as your template. | Columns move with each scan. | The same columns in the same order every time. |
| Codes and amounts | You split them by hand. | One cell with letters and amounts together. | W:1250;A:300 style cells, one codes column per coded box. |
| Unclear values | You notice, or you do not. | Passed through as text, with no warning. | Held out of the cell and listed in needs_review. |
| Proof for each cell | Re-open the PDF. | None. | The source line for every value, on the result page and in the checklist CSV. |
| Privacy of identifiers | Your own spreadsheet holds the numbers you type. | Full SSN and EIN in the output file. | Last four digits only. |
Plain answers
Questions about the K-1 CSV
What is in the K-1 CSV?
One row per K-1 and 55 fixed columns: the form type, partnership name and EIN last four, partner name and SSN last four, every box from 1 to 20 (with sub-boxes such as 4a and 9c), a codes column for each coded box, partner type and role, tax year, final and amended flags, the six profit, loss and capital percentages, a K-3 flag, an other_form_boxes column and a needs_review column.
How are codes stored in the CSV?
Coded boxes have one codes column each: box_11_codes, box_13_codes and so on through box_20_codes. Each cell holds code and amount pairs separated by semicolons, for example A:1200;H:340;L:85. A code that points to an attached statement is written as Z:STMT, and a code whose amount could not be read is written as A:REVIEW. The plain box_13 column stays empty for coded boxes.
Why is a box empty in my CSV?
Either the box is blank on your K-1, or its value was held back for review. The needs_review column lists the held boxes, for example box_1;box_11;box_20, and the same items appear in the Needs review list on the page with the source line and the possible readings.
How do I open the CSV in Excel or Google Sheets?
The file is UTF-8 with a byte-order mark, so Excel opens it directly and shows accented names correctly. In Google Sheets use File, Import, Upload. Amounts are plain numbers with no thousands separators or currency signs, so you can sum a column across K-1s.
Can I combine the CSVs from several uploads?
Yes. The columns are fixed and in the same order every time, so you can paste the rows from one CSV under the header of another. Each upload produces one CSV with one row for every K-1 in that file.
What are the percentage columns?
They come from Part II, item J: your share of profit, loss and capital at the beginning and end of the year. The values are percent numbers, so 0.85 means 0.85 percent. A column is empty when the K-1 does not show that share.
Are my full SSN and EIN in the CSV?
No. The CSV has ein_last4 and ssn_last4 only. The reader masks identifiers before the result leaves our server, so the full numbers are not in the table, the CSV, the checklist or the source lines.
What is the other_form_boxes column?
For a Form 1120-S or Form 1041 K-1 the Form 1065 box columns do not apply, so the values are written into one column as box and amount pairs such as 1=12480 or 12:A=350. For a Form 1065 K-1 the column holds only items outside the 1 to 20 range, such as an out-of-range box that has a value.
Why do some text cells start with an apostrophe?
Text cells that begin with =, +, - or @ are prefixed with an apostrophe so a spreadsheet cannot run them as a formula. Numbers are never changed.
How is the CSV different from the checklist?
The CSV is one wide row per K-1 for your records and for sorting and totalling. The checklist is a long list, one line per box and code, in the order you would type them, with a column that says where in your tax software to enter each one and the source line to check it against.
