Schedule K-1 (Form 1065), box 16

Box 16: Schedule K-3 is attached if checked

A checkbox that tells you foreign-transaction detail is on an attached Schedule K-3. It is a flag, not a dollar amount.

What box 16 reports

On recent K-1s, box 16 is a checkbox meaning a Schedule K-3 (Partner's Share of Income, Deductions, Credits, etc. - International) is attached.

On K-1s for years before 2021 box 16 was titled Foreign transactions and carried codes and amounts. K1 FastTax recognises the older wording.

Where it goes on your return

Flag only

The common case

There is no entry for box 16 itself on Form 1040. If it is checked, the attached Schedule K-3 holds the foreign items, which can matter for the foreign tax credit.

When it depends on you

Which K-3 parts you need depends on the K-3 instructions and your own situation.

A real example line

Below, a line written the way the document text arrives, run through the same reader as your upload. The reader matches the box number and the IRS label, then reads the amount, so it still finds the line when the scan is noisy.

Check before you enter it

  • K1 FastTax does not read Schedule K-3. A checked box 16 adds a K-3 line to the review list so you do not miss it.
  • Foreign taxes paid or accrued are in box 21, which is outside the exported range.

In the K1 FastTax output

CSV column: box_16 (X when checked) and k3_attached. In the checklist a line looks like Schedule K-1 (1065) screen, box 16. All CSV columns.

Official source

The IRS text for every box is in the Partner’s Instructions for Schedule K-1 (Form 1065). Use the edition for the tax year printed on your K-1, because box wording and code lists change.

Where are foreign taxes paid on my K-1?

Foreign taxes paid or accrued are in box 21, which is outside the box 1 to 20 columns. K1 FastTax adds a review item for it and lists the amount in the other_form_boxes column, for example 21=125, so that it is not overlooked.

My older K-1 has foreign transactions in box 16. Is that the same box?

On K-1s for years before 2021 box 16 was titled Foreign transactions and carried codes and amounts. K1 FastTax recognises the older wording and writes those lines to box_16_codes, for example A:5000;B:300. Code letters and titles change between tax years, so check the instructions for the year on your K-1.

How do I know which parts of the Schedule K-3 I need?

Which K-3 parts you need depends on the K-3 instructions and on your own situation, for example whether you claim the foreign tax credit. Ask your preparer, and see the Partner's Instructions for Schedule K-3 (Form 1065).

Is box 16 the same on a Form 1120-S K-1?

On a Form 1120-S K-1 the Schedule K-3 checkbox is box 14. Box numbers differ between forms, so read the label next to the box.
