Box 20 · code Z

K-1 box 20 code Z: the 199A statement it always points at

Z is the letter that makes box 20 worth reading carefully. Behind it sits the qualified business income information, and the deduction built on it is usually the largest number on a partner's return that came from a K-1.

The wording on the form is: Section 199A information. Read against the year printed in the K-1 header, because the letters are reassigned between years.

Where the letter goes

Form 8995 or Form 8995-A, built from the components on the attached statement: qualified business income, W-2 wages, UBIA of qualified property, REIT dividends and publicly traded partnership income.

The 199A deduction is computed at the partner level from components, not from a total the partnership could have printed. That is why Z carries a statement instead of an amount.

What has to be true before any of it can be claimed

  • The statement exists. A K-1 showing Z with no statement is an incomplete K-1, not a zero, and the deduction cannot be reconstructed from anything else on the page.
  • The statement belongs to this partner. Fund statements look identical apart from the header, which is why the name and identifying number are the first thing to compare and the last thing anyone checks.
  • The trade or business is not a specified service trade or business, or the partner is under the threshold where that distinction stops mattering. That test is made at the partner's level using the partner's taxable income.

What the statement has to show

Take the profit share in Part II item J from the K-1 and the same figure from the statement: they have to agree, in the same form, for the same year. Then add the QBI components the statement gives. Where the statement also reports the partnership's total, the partner's share has to fall out of it at that percentage without rounding that changes the figure.

What goes wrong, and the shape of it

  • The statement belonging to another partner. Every number on it is real and every total ties — to a different investor. Arithmetic cannot catch this; only the identity line can.
  • A draft statement kept beside the final K-1. Drafts are issued before late adjustments. Where the two disagree, the filed K-1 is the one that governs and the draft is a document to discard rather than reconcile.
  • One row for Z and AJ together. Two codes on one line loses which figure came from which statement, and the two statements are different lengths and different years of origin.

What the reading step does here, and what it does not

K1 FastTax reads the code letter and amount printed in box 20, keeps STMT as STMT, and records the page. It does not read the 199A statement and does not compute the deduction.

The rest of box 20 is in the full box 20 code list , and the printed wording of the box itself is on the box 20 page . This page describes where a code goes; it is not tax advice, and the Partner's Instructions for the year on your K-1 are the authority.

Plain answers

Questions about box 20 code Z

What is K-1 box 20 code Z?

Section 199A information. It tells the partner that qualified business income information was allocated to them, and in practice it means a statement is attached, because the components do not fit in a single amount space.

Why does code Z show STMT instead of an amount?

Because the amount is not one number. The qualified business income, the W-2 wages, the UBIA of qualified property and any REIT or PTP items are separate figures, and the K-1 prints a statement reference instead of picking one.

What do I compare first on a Z statement?

The name and identifying number in the statement header against the same fields on the K-1. Every fund in a batch issues statements that look alike, so identity is the comparison that catches the expensive mistake.

Can I enter zero when Z has no amount?

No. A code that says STMT is telling you an amount exists on a page you have not opened. Zero makes the row look finished and hides the only thing a reviewer needed to see.
