Schedule K-1 (Form 1065), box 1

Box 1: Ordinary business income (loss)

Your share of the partnership's day-to-day business profit or loss, usually carried to Schedule E, Part II.

What box 1 reports

Your share of the partnership's ordinary income or loss from its trade or business activities for the year, before any limit that applies on your own return. A number in parentheses is a loss.

Interest, dividends, capital gains, rental income and guaranteed payments are reported in their own boxes and are not included here.

Where it goes on your return

Schedule E, Part II

The common case

In the common case box 1 is reported on Schedule E (Form 1040), Part II, line 28. The column depends on whether the activity is passive for you or you materially participated. A loss from a passive activity is first run through Form 8582.

When it depends on you

A loss can be limited by your basis in the partnership, the at-risk rules (Form 6198) and the passive activity rules (Form 8582), and the unused part may carry forward. Publicly traded partnerships, real estate professionals and the excess business loss limit have their own rules. See the Partner's Instructions for Schedule K-1 (Form 1065).

Check before you enter it

  • Parentheses or a leading minus mean a loss. A scan that loses the closing parenthesis is the most common reason K1 FastTax holds a box 1 value for review instead of guessing the sign.
  • A large loss in box 1 is not automatically deductible this year. The K-1 does not show your basis or your at-risk amount.
  • If the partnership also reports guaranteed payments (box 4) or self-employment earnings (box 14), those are separate entries.

Plain answers

Questions about box 1

Where does box 1 of a Form 1065 K-1 go on my tax return?

In the common case box 1 is reported on Schedule E (Form 1040), Part II, line 28. The column depends on whether the activity is passive for you or you materially participated, and a loss from a passive activity is run through Form 8582 first. Your own situation can change this, so check the Partner's Instructions for Schedule K-1 (Form 1065).

What does it mean when box 1 is negative or in parentheses?

A number in parentheses, or with a leading minus, is your share of a loss. A loss in box 1 is not automatically deductible this year: your basis in the partnership, the at-risk rules and the passive activity rules can limit it, and an unused part may carry forward. The K-1 does not show your basis. See the Partner's Instructions for Schedule K-1 (Form 1065) for the year on your K-1.

The closing parenthesis is missing on my scan. Is box 1 a gain or a loss?

K1 FastTax does not guess. When a sign is unclear it leaves the box 1 cell empty, names box_1 in the needs_review column and the review list, and shows both readings, for example 4,218 or -4,218, next to the line it read. Look at the paper K-1 and enter the right one yourself.

Is box 1 the same as the cash the partnership paid me?

No. Box 1 is your share of the partnership's business profit or loss for the year. Cash and property paid out to you are distributions, which appear in box 19 and generally reduce your basis rather than count as income. A partnership can pay you cash while box 1 shows a loss, or report income in box 1 without paying you anything.

Box 19: distributions

Does box 1 count as self-employment income?

Box 1 itself is not the self-employment figure. The partnership reports your net earnings (loss) from self-employment separately in box 14, code A, and that amount goes on Schedule SE. Whether your share of box 1 is included depends on the facts, such as whether you are a general or a limited partner. See box 14 and the Partner's Instructions.

Box 14: self-employment earnings

Box 1 shows a code or STMT instead of a number. What do I enter?

Box 1 does not normally have codes. STMT or an asterisk means the amount is on a statement attached to the K-1, so read the statement for the figure. K1 FastTax does not guess: it leaves that CSV cell empty, names the box in needs_review and adds the line to the review list. A code letter printed next to an amount in a box that has no codes is held for review the same way, so check it against the paper K-1 and the Partner's Instructions for Schedule K-1 (Form 1065).

Which CSV column holds box 1, and what if it is blank?

Box 1 is in the box_1 column as a plain number, for example 12480, with a leading minus for a loss and no thousands separators or currency signs. A blank box 1 is an empty cell, not a zero. A value whose sign could not be read is also left out of the cell and named in needs_review, so you can find it.

Is box 1 the same on a Form 1120-S or a Form 1041 K-1?

Box 1 is also ordinary business income on a Form 1120-S K-1, but on a Form 1041 K-1 ordinary business income is box 6. Box numbers do not carry across forms, so read the label next to the number, not only the number.
